Re: the deaths of the children in Oklahoma

iamkissedbyfire:

A lot of people are asking why the children were in the school, why school wasn’t canceled, etc. These criticisms of the school faculty, parents, and weather official are extremely unfair. If you do not live in Tornado Alley, you cannot imagine the sheer desensitization to tornado sirens/tornado warnings that we experience. 99% of the time (like tonight, for most of us) when you are under a tornado watch or warning, you carry on with your life unless you can hear the storm bearing down on you or your power goes out. These deaths are tragic, but the school officials had no idea that today would be the day that tragedy would strike their school. You can suggest that schools build better/more tornado shelters or design a more effective, less “Cry Wolf” warning system, but I can do without the “Why the hell didn’t they cancel school/evacuate the school/send the kids home?” comments.

Tornadoes are not quite like hurricanes. You can’t track them/predict them in the same way.

I slept for fifteen hours last night and now I’m eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch out of plastic container while watching some dumb DIscovery Channel true crime show and also I got out of work this Saturday which means I’ll have a Saturday off for the first time since February and the answer to the question “who is the real winner here” is permanently me.

Lui recently talked about race and being typecasted with the luxury online retailer Net-a-porter.com:
“I wish people wouldn’t just see me as the Asian girl who beats everyone up, or the Asian girl with no emotion. People see Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock in a romantic comedy, but not me. You add race to it, and it became, ‘Well, she’s too Asian’, or, ‘She’s too American’. I kind of got pushed out of both categories. It’s a very strange place to be. You’re not Asian enough and then you’re not American enough, so it gets really frustrating.”
Liu’s wary of playing the racism card, but admits that she had to “push a lot just to get in the room”. “I can’t say that there is no racism - there’s definitely something there that’s not easy, which makes [an acting career] much more difficult.”
